Pixel Testing & Troubleshooting

Understand Topple’s three conversion pixel types, why Dynamic Conversion Pixels require a completed test purchase to verify correctly, how to run a Pixel Test Campaign, and how to troubleshoot Conversion Value failures.

Understanding Topple Pixels

Topple uses two types of pixels: a Conversion Pixel (records goal completions such as purchases or signups) and a Retargeting Pixel (records site visits to build an audience for retargeting campaigns). Both are created through Pixel Center in your Topple account. Testing both before relying on them for campaign data prevents silent failures where campaigns run but no conversion or audience data is captured.

Conversion Pixel Types

When creating a conversion goal, you choose one of three tag types:

  1. 1No Value — records that a conversion happened without any revenue figure. Use this for goals where the conversion event itself matters but the monetary value does not (e.g. a lead form submission), and for the Retargeting Pixel.
  2. 2Fixed Value — records every conversion at the same predetermined dollar amount you set when creating the goal. Use this when every conversion is worth the same amount.
  3. 3Dynamic Value — passes the real order total back to Topple each time the pixel fires. The advertiser must modify the data-value parameter in the pixel code so it captures the actual cart or order total from their website. Use this for e-commerce where order value varies per transaction.

Understanding the Dynamic Conversion Pixel

The Dynamic Conversion Pixel requires light coding to implement correctly. The advertiser modifies a data-value parameter in the pixel code so that each time the pixel fires on the thank-you page, it passes the actual order total back to Topple. Because every website and e-commerce configuration is different, the exact implementation can vary. This is the step where implementation mistakes most commonly occur.

IMPORTANT

Documentation gap: The Support Center does not yet contain a universal Dynamic Conversion Pixel implementation code example. If you need implementation guidance specific to your website platform, contact Topple Support.

Why Dynamic Conversion Pixels Need Testing

A Dynamic Conversion Pixel can appear to fire correctly — the network request completes, the pixel count increments — while still failing to pass the Conversion Value. This happens when the data-value parameter is not correctly wired to the actual order total. The result: Topple records conversions but records no revenue, which means Revenue, Net Revenue, and ROAS in your reporting are all incorrect.

WARNING

"Pixel fired" does not mean "Dynamic Conversion Value verified." A pixel fire only confirms the pixel code executed. Verification of a Dynamic Conversion Pixel requires completing a real test purchase and confirming that the expected order total appears as the Conversion Value in Topple reporting.

Why Browser DevTools Are Not Sufficient for Dynamic Pixels

Browser developer tools can confirm that a pixel network request was made. They cannot confirm whether the Conversion Value carried in that request was received and recorded correctly by Topple. The authoritative verification is always the Conversion Value that appears in your Topple campaign-performance report — not what appears in the Network tab of DevTools.

IMPORTANT

Do not rely solely on browser developer tools to verify a Dynamic Conversion Pixel. Even if the pixel request appears successful in DevTools, the Conversion Value may not have been passed correctly. Complete a test purchase and check the Conversion Value in Topple reporting.

Requesting a Pixel Test Campaign

Pixel Test Campaigns are launched by a Topple Admin — this is not a self-service process. To request one, contact Topple with the following information:

  1. 1Your name
  2. 2Your company name
  3. 3Which pixels to test — Conversion Pixel, Retargeting Pixel, or both
  4. 4Your 300×250 ad creative
  5. 5Your destination URL (the page the ad should link to)

Running the Pixel Test

After Topple notifies you that your Pixel Test Campaign is live, go to the Topple Pixel Test Page and follow these steps:

  1. 1
Visit the Pixel Test Page and refresh until your 300×250 ad appears. It may take a couple of refreshes — multiple clients may be running Pixel Test Campaigns simultaneously.
  2. 2
    Click your ad.
  3. 3
Allow the destination URL to fully load.
  4. 4
Add an item to your cart.
  5. 5
    Complete a real test purchase.

Verifying the Test in Your Topple Dashboard

After completing the test purchase, log into Topple and verify the results:

  1. 1
    Log into your Topple account.
  2. 2
    Select the Conversion Data toggle.
  3. 3
Select the relevant pixels from the pixel selector.
  4. 4
Review the campaign-performance table. Scroll horizontally if needed — there may be more columns than are immediately visible.
  5. 5
Set the date range to the exact date the test purchase was completed. Use TODAY if completed today, YESTERDAY if yesterday, or the specific date otherwise. Do not use a broad date range when verifying a pixel test.

What Success Looks Like

A successful test should show the following in the campaign-performance report:

  1. 1Impressions: a few (exact count may vary)
  2. 2Clicks: approximately 1
  3. 3Retargeting Pixel: 1 (if retargeting was included in the test)
  4. 4Add to Cart Pixel: 1 (if applicable)
  5. 5Conversion Pixel: 1
  6. 6Conversion Value: the actual total of your test order — for example, if the test purchase totaled $84.37, the Conversion Value should show $84.37

Troubleshooting Dynamic Conversion Value

If the report shows any of the following, the Dynamic Conversion Pixel is not successfully passing the Conversion Value to Topple:

WARNING

This means the data-value parameter in the pixel code is not capturing or passing the correct order total. Further debugging is required. Contact Topple Support to investigate — do not assume the pixel is working correctly just because the Conversion Pixel fire count shows 1.

  1. 1The Conversion Value column is blank
  2. 2The Conversion Value shows "Dynamic Value" instead of an amount
  3. 3The Conversion Value does not match the actual test order total

Common Pixel Testing Mistakes

  1. 1Treating a pixel fire as proof the Dynamic Conversion Value is working — a pixel can fire successfully while still passing no conversion value or the wrong value. Always verify the Conversion Value in reporting, not just the pixel count.
  2. 2Setting a broad date range when verifying the test — a broad date range mixes test data with real campaign data, making it hard to isolate the test purchase. Always set the date range to the exact day of the test.
  3. 3Forgetting to select the Conversion Data toggle and relevant pixels — the campaign-performance table may not show conversion columns unless the correct toggles and pixel selectors are active.
  4. 4Not completing a real purchase during the test — the Dynamic Conversion Pixel fires on the thank-you or order confirmation page. If you close the browser before completing checkout, the pixel does not fire and no test data is recorded.
  5. 5Testing in a browser with ad-blocking extensions enabled — ad blockers can prevent the test ad from loading and prevent pixel requests from completing. Disable extensions or use a private/incognito window for testing.

Pixel Testing vs. Attribution

A successful Pixel Test demonstrates that your tracking implementation is working — the pixel fires and passes data to Topple correctly. It does not mean every future conversion will automatically be attributed to a campaign. Attribution is a separate step: it depends on whether a qualifying click-to-conversion connection exists, along with your selected attribution window and Count setting.
