Blocking Converted Users

Exclude users who already converted from continuing to see your retargeting ads.

What Blocking Converted Users Does

When you run a retargeting campaign to bring past visitors back to convert, you typically do not want to keep showing ads to people who already purchased. Blocking converted users tells Topple to exclude anyone who has fired your conversion pixel from the retargeting audience — so your budget reaches people who still need to be convinced, not people who already bought.

How It Works

You need a separate conversion pixel installed on your thank-you page — this pixel identifies users who completed a purchase. When setting up or editing a retargeting campaign, you can select this conversion pixel as a blocklist. Topple then excludes any user who has fired that pixel from receiving your retargeting ads.

Tracking Flow

A clean tracking setup looks like this: a retargeting pixel on all site pages (except the thank-you page) builds your visitor audience → a retargeting campaign targets that audience → a conversion pixel on the thank-you page records purchases → the conversion pixel is used to block those purchasers from the retargeting audience.

TIP

Prospecting finds new visitors → a retargeting pixel remembers them → a retargeting campaign brings them back → a conversion pixel tells you when they buy → blocking converted users keeps your retargeting budget focused on people who have not yet converted.

Common Mistakes

  1. 1Confusing the retargeting pixel's thank-you-page exclusion with the Blocking Converted Users feature — these are two separate mechanisms that serve different roles. Not installing the retargeting pixel on the thank-you page is a passive exclusion: users who only visit the thank-you page (and no other page) won't be tracked as site visitors at all. Blocking Converted Users is an active exclusion: it explicitly removes anyone who has fired the conversion pixel from your retargeting audience, including visitors who browsed the site, added to cart, and then eventually purchased. You need both for a clean setup.
  2. 2Selecting the conversion pixel from the wrong campaign — if you run multiple products or conversion goals, confirm you are selecting the correct conversion pixel as the blocklist. Selecting the wrong pixel may block the wrong group of users, or block no one if the pixel has not fired.
  3. 3Setting up blocking converted users after the campaign has already been running — previously seen converted users who were already receiving your ads will continue to be served until the blocklist is applied and propagates. Apply blocking converted users at campaign setup, not as an afterthought.
