What Makes Great
Video
Creative.

The principles behind video advertising creative that connects — from the first second to the final call to action.

Capture attention in the first few seconds

Digital video viewers are not a captive audience. They are reading, scrolling, or watching other content when your ad appears. You have a short window to earn their attention — and if you don’t use it, the ad runs to completion without anyone watching. The opening of a digital video ad needs to be the strongest part of the spot. Lead with the most compelling element: a striking visual, an unexpected statement, a product demonstration, or a question that creates genuine curiosity. Do not open with a logo fade, a slow brand build, or a long setup before the actual message begins.

Establish your brand early

The classic television ad convention — hide the brand until the end, reveal it as the payoff — does not translate to digital advertising. An unskippable ad might get away with it. A skippable or partially-viewed ad cannot. Make the brand clear in the first few seconds. This does not mean opening with a logo animation — it means the visual identity, product, or brand voice should be recognizable from the start, so even partial views create meaningful brand exposure.

Design for sound-off viewing

Much of digital video content — including advertising — is consumed without audio. A video ad that relies entirely on a voiceover or music to carry its message will communicate nothing to a significant portion of its audience. Design video ads that communicate their core message visually: on-screen text, captions, product demonstrations that read clearly without audio. Caption your video ads. Captions improve comprehension for users without audio, and for those who are hard of hearing.

Keep it concise

Digital video advertising is not the place for long-form storytelling. Shorter creative tends to perform better in digital advertising environments — not because viewers lack attention spans, but because you are interrupting existing content consumption rather than sitting in a dedicated content format. Fifteen to thirty seconds is typically the right range for digital video ads. Longer creative can work for highly engaged audiences and specific placements, but should not be the default assumption.

End with a clear call to action

Every video ad should end with a clear, visible call to action — on screen, not just in audio. What do you want the viewer to do? Visit your site, shop a product, learn more about an offer? State it clearly with a URL or CTA text that is readable at video resolution. Create multiple video variants — different lengths, different opening hooks, different CTAs — to allow the platform to optimize between them.

Questions

Questions,
answered.

What’s the ideal length for a video ad on Topple?
15 to 30 seconds is a practical target range for most digital video advertising. Shorter spots require tight, focused creative; longer spots require enough story to justify the runtime. Consult the Topple platform for any format-specific duration requirements or limits.
Can I repurpose a TV commercial for digital advertising?
A TV commercial can be adapted for digital, but repurposing without adjustment often produces poor results. TV spots are frequently 30 to 60 seconds, assume audio, and are built for a passive, captive viewing environment. Digital requires shorter runtimes, visual clarity without sound, and an immediate hook. At minimum, create a cut-down version that front-loads the message and adds on-screen text.
Do I need professional video production?
Production quality affects perceived brand quality. Low-quality production can undermine the credibility of an otherwise good message. That said, production budget is not the primary determinant of ad effectiveness — message clarity, relevance to the audience, and creative execution matter more than production cost.
Should I add subtitles?
Yes. Subtitles improve comprehension for the significant portion of viewers who watch video without sound, and for those who are hard of hearing.
